Running repairs

Period pictures of horses being treated for injuries are so rare I thought I’d post this one when I came across it.

Member of French 4th Hussars wrapping a leg wound (Courtesy of www.napoleon-series.org).  The gold chevron insignia suggests this man is a sergeant, though badges of rank were usually positioned on the lower sleeve.

French cavalry had a reputation, at least amongst their enemies, for poor treatment of their mounts on campaign. Perhaps this was drawn partly in response to such criticisms.
